Gabby Agbonlahor claims Chelsea looked “a lot better” on Saturday with Ben Chilwell on the pitch against West Ham.
The Blues were trailing 1-0 at Stamford Bridge courtesy of Michail Antonio’s opener just past the hour mark for visitors West Ham.
However, Chilwell’s introduction as a substitute in the 72nd minute completely changed the Premier League contest.
The left wing-back scored an equaliser with a cute finish through the goalkeeper’s legs. Afterwards, he assisted match-winner Kai Havertz with his cross into the box.
Agbonlahor applauds Chilwell
TalkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor feels like a major turning point in the weekend’s match was Chilwell replacing teammate Marc Cucurella in the 72nd minute.
“Cucurella was brought off, Chilwell came on, goal and assist. You (Chelsea) looked a lot better when Chilwell came on,” Agbonlahor told buxyi.
Chilwell’s being eased back into the side after a long-term injury last season, with manager Thomas Tuchel even confirming at the start of this campaign he wasn’t 100 per cent fit to play.
The 25-year-old definitely looked sharp against West Ham today, though.
He’s got a huge fight on his hand for a starting position following the arrival of summer signing Cucurella, who provides immense energy up and down the left wing.
However, it feels like Chilwell’s got the edge when it comes to providing a genuine goalscoring threat.
With a World Cup just a few months away, the England international must be desperate to get back into Chelsea’s best line-up.
There’s so many fixtures coming up where surely Tuchel will want to rotate where he can. He’s in a lucky position where the standard is exceptionally high on which ever left-sided defender he picks.
